Responsible for the efficient, accurate, complete, and timely preparation of all clients' tax returns. Advanced technical skills in a variety of tax and accounting areas, along with well-developed and applied management and supervisory skills are required. Tax Managers makes decisions on all but the most unusual tax situations. Managers and Senior Managers typically have a minimum of 6-10 years of public accounting experience in a Tax department.

Essential Functions:

  1. Demonstrate competency in technical skills, work quality, and application of professional standards and firm policies.
  2. Supervise and/or coordinate phases of engagements including planning engagements, set budgets for time and expenses and monitor actual performance against budget.
  3. Direct and instruct staff, where applicable, in work to be performed and work paper preparation.
  4. Perform technical review and approval of all tax returns and governmental tax examinations of any complexity.
  5. Provide review notes on engagements so that staff can develop their skills.
  6. Assume full responsibility for larger tax returns and delegates to the various tax preparers as deemed necessary.
  7. Participate actively in client meetings and tax planning efforts to assist the A&A departments with larger clients.
  8. Act as a resource for tax preparers and A&A staff on specific tax issues and/or questions.
  9. Assume tax preparation responsibility for the more complex business returns.
  10. Assume responsibility for smooth flow of tax returns through the tax preparation system to assure accurate, complete and timely preparation and delivery of all clients' tax returns.
  11. Assume client service responsibilities as delegated by the Partner.
  12. Proactively address tax issues and conduct appropriate research regarding client's tax issues in order to resolve them.
  13. Prepare personal tax projections through utilization of computer software.
  14. Prepare complex individual, trust, corporate, partnership, and S-Corp income tax returns and state income tax returns.
  15. Review tax returns prepared by staff in the Tax department or staff in other departments.
  16. Complete S-Corp election and requests for accounting changes, as required.
  17. Make adjusting and/or federal entries and complete trial balances in order to prepare a tax return.
  18. Maintain a good understanding of depreciation and depreciation computer software package in order to set up clients and read and understand depreciation reports.
  19. Respond to tax notices of any sort and draft letter of response for Partner review and signature.
  20. Maintain familiarity with qualifications of all tax staff members; reviews staff assignments for appropriateness.
  21. Meet time budgets and client deadlines.
  22. Interact with clients' to resolve tax issues, and correspond with taxing authorities to resolve client problems.
  23. Maintain knowledge of general economic and political trends of possible tax or other legislation that could affect the business climate.
  24. Prepare tax accruals as may be required in preparing corporate tax returns.
  25. Work with confidential client matters; requires ability to keep matters confidential.
  26. Work to develop responsible, trained staff by assisting in recruiting, performance evaluations, developing training aids, and acting as an instructor in professional development programs.

Other Functions:

  1. Draft proposals for new business.
  2. Prepare other reports and projects as requested from time to time by the partners.
  3. Assist with monthly client billings as requested by Partner.
  4. Participate in Career Development sessions with Staff.
  5. Participate in firm's practice development efforts including expanding services to clients, and begin to generate new business for the firm on a regular basis.
  6. Develop professional relationships with clients, prospective clients and outside professionals.
  7. Perform other duties as may be assigned.


Required Education, Experience and Skills:

  1. Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Accounting or comparable 6-10 years public accounting experience.
  2. A current and valid Certified Public Accountant license is required, must be in good standing with the state board and AICPA.
  3. Must have accounting experience in the construction industry or with construction clients.
  4. In addition to the qualifications above, 7 years of public accounting experience demonstrating a progression in complexity, scope, and number of engagements managed (or comparable industry experience in business tax area).
  5. Minimum of 20 hours of continuing professional education is required each year to maintain and develop technical and business skills.
  6. Proficiency in accounting/tax software programs (ProSystems FX preferred) and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word 2010 etc).
  7. Strong knowledge of Internal Revenue Code and regulations, various tax forms and their interrelationships, return filing requirements and due dates.
  8. Extensive knowledge of tax research sources (i.e. BNA and RIA Checkpoint).
  9. Ability to recognize various tax issues and conduct appropriate research; ability to analyze complex accounting issues.
  10. Ability to communicate clear, correct and concise English in verbal and written form with clients, taxing authorities, partners and peers.
  11. Ability to establish workload priorities and perform assigned tasks on engagements or projects in a timely manner and within budget.
  12. Ability to keep Partners apprised of progress and problems and review timely to meet established deadlines.
  13. Superior interpersonal skills applicable to client environment; ability to maintain a professional presence while at the client's office and maintain confidentiality.
  14. Ability to prepare business and individual income tax returns in an efficient and effective manner with minimal supervision.
  15. Ability to train, supervise and review the work of staff accountants.
  16. Ability to interface with perspective clients and to identify and pursue marketing and networking opportunities.

Working Conditions:

  1. Overtime work required throughout the year based on various tax filing deadlines. Heavy overtime work required from mid-January to April 15; may be in excess of 50 hours per week.
  2. Occasional in-town travel to client's office, meetings and seminars using a personal vehicle.
  3. Full-time compensation based on 2300 total hours annually.
