Senior I accountants are given a wide variety of diversified assurance assignments.  Senior I accountants are working toward full engagement responsibility as an in-charge (Senior).  This involves supervising the workflow of any Staff on the engagement.  Performance is judged based on the quality of work, application of accounting knowledge, and ability to meet time and budget constraints. 

Essential Functions:

In-Charge Responsibilities:

  1. Proactively works on technical/more difficult sections first and demonstrates competency in technical skills, work quality, and application of professional and firm standards.
  2. Bring any technical issues to the attention of the manager, principal or partner on the engagement.
  3. Establish client filing deadlines in the planning stage and meet those deadlines.
  4. Coordinate various phases of engagements, plan engagements, budget time and expenses, monitor actual performance against budget and communicate status to supervisor, manager, principal and partner.
  5. Prepare and/or review working papers for accuracy and completeness.
  6. Supervise workflow of Staff I and Staff II accountants assigned to engagement. Support training of staff members, offer guidance and direction, and give constructive criticism of working papers.
  7. Perform preliminary analytical procedures, prepare engagement letter, and assess risk.
  8. Determine the extent of sampling required and selects the transactions to be tested.
  9. Ensure that working papers, financial statements, tax returns, and management letters are prepare in accordance with professional and firm standards on a timely basis.
  10. Communicate engagement's progress, problems, resolutions, financial information, tax activity and other business concerns to the manager, principal or partner working on the engagement.
  11. Prepare financial statements including footnotes and audit reports.
  12. Prepare routine correspondence to client for approval and signature of a partner; draft management letters.
  13. Prepare appropriate tax return for review by the tax department.
  14. Perform the broadest range of accounting tasks so that direct participation of supervisors, managers, principals or partners is kept to a minimum.
  15. Review disclosure checklist.
  16. Study and evaluate clients' internal controls.

Staff Responsibilities:

  1. Reconcile accounts to control accounts during audit.
  2. Perform schedule computations, including but not limited to property and equipment and related depreciation expense.
  3. Perform audit or review procedures as assigned by supervisors.
  4. Assist in preparing and proofing financial statements, tax returns, and other documents.
  5. Perform other accounting, auditing, and tax duties as needed on engagements and as assigned by supervisory personnel.
  6. Perform detailed audit procedures.                                                                                                     
  7. Draft audit reports including financials and footnote disclosures.
  8. Plan and perform small audit engagements.
  9. Draft representation letters and engagement letters.
  10. Complete disclosure checklists.
  11. Suggest comments for management letters found through audit or review procedures.
  12. Plan and complete agreed upon procedure engagements.
  13. Keep supervisor apprised of progress and any problems or issues in order to meet established deadlines and maintain budget.

Other Functions:

  1. Participate in firm's practice development efforts including expanding services to clients.
  2. Prepare other reports, projects, and duties as may be assigned.

Education, Experience and Required Skills:

  1. Bachelors or Masters degree in Accounting.
  2. 2-3 years of public accounting experience required, demonstrating a progression in complexity of auditing and accounting tasks and tax knowledge OR  6-7 years of comparable industry experience (audit related).
  3. Posses a current and valid certified public accountant's license.  If not licensed, must be able to demonstrate established intent to obtain a license by pursuing the 150 college credit hours necessary to set for the Uniform CPA examination.
  4. Ability to identify accounting and auditing issues in assigned areas and research accounting and auditing issues encountered on an engagement.
  5. Ability to complete assigned tasks on time and within budget.
  6. Ability to keep supervisors apprised of progress and problems and review timely to meet established deadlines.
  7. Well rounded knowledge of accounting principles, basic knowledge of GAAP and GAAS.
  8. Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel (2010 or Windows 7).
  9. Experience with audit software (CCH Engagement preferred).
  10. Knowledge of contents and application of audit programs.
  11. Ability to communicate clear, correct and concise English both in writing and verbally with clients, supervisors, partners and peers.
  12. Superior interpersonal skills applicable to client environment.
  13. Minimum of twenty (20) hours of continuing professional education is required each year to maintain and develop technical and business skills.

Working Conditions:

  1. Frequent same day travel for work at client's offices, meetings, and seminars using a personal vehicle.
  2. Occasional out-of-town travel with overnight stay for work at clients, meetings, or seminars using a personal vehicle.
  3. Overtime work required throughout the year based on audit scheduling.  Heavy overtime work required from mid-January to April 15; may be in excess of 50 hours per week.
